Hatsuri is a technique of roughly hewing wood with a hatchet, characterized by the roughness and power that comes from striking and splitting the wood. However, beauty does not emerge from just any piece of wood. The appearance changes completely depending on the wood’s toughness, grain, and the angle of the hatchet. For example, with wood that has a twisted grain pattern, it is important to strike with the hatchet in a way that makes use of the twist.

　After bringing out the wood's unique qualities, Jihei let the wood take the lead. Then he encounters masterpieces of unexpected beauty. Hatsuri is a collaborative effort between Jihei and the wood.
